This is a series of eight stand-ins or display copies of stone sculptures by the British artist Barbara Hepworth (1903 – 1975). The physical space these repicas occupy is identical to the originals, but the sculptor’s material in this case, paper and cardboard, lend these objects a new and ambiguous psychic weight. This project is based on an interest in Hepworth’s forms as representative of their era. Hepworth also believed that abstract art could powerfully communicate abstract ideas and could even function as a catalyst for social progress. Each paper sculpture is mounted on a solid stone base.
